Biography

Dr. Augustino Ting Mayai is the current Director General of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Government of South Sudan. He is the former Managing Director of the Sudd Institute and one of its founding Research Directors, where he served for over a decade.

Dr. Mayai holds a Ph.D. in Sociology (Demography & Development) and a Master's degree in Sociology/Demography from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from the University of Utah.

His academic and professional work focuses on governance, development, health, and state effectiveness, with a particular emphasis on how state capacity influences child health outcomes in South Sudan and Ethiopia.

Over the years, he has written extensively on South Sudan's social, economic, and political affairs, authoring influential research papers, policy briefs, and commentary pieces that have shaped national and international understanding of South Sudan's challenges and opportunities.
