National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and United Nation Development Program (UNDP) Conclude Power BI Data Analysis Training

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the African Development Bank (AfDB), today concludes a 13-day intensive digital data analysis and visualization training program focused on Microsoft Power BI. Financed by AfDB under the Institutional Support Project for Strengthening Economic Governance in South Sudan (STEG-SS), the training brought together statisticians, economists, planners, and monitoring and evaluation (M&E) officers from the NBS and partner government institutions. Designed to bridge data/statistics and strategic decision-making, the curriculum equipped participants with practical technical competencies in Power BI. Based on the Microsoft PL-300 Power BI Data Analyst certification standards, the program utilized a Training-of-Trainers ( ) model. This model ensures that participants return to their respective ministries, departments, and agencies equipped to pass these analytical skills to colleagues, embedding sustainable institutional capacity across South Sudan's statistical system. Addressing participants, Hon. Dr. Augustino Ting Mayai, Director General of the National Bureau of Statistics, outlined his vision for transforming the country’s statistical framework and commended lead facilitator Mr. Damtew Engida. He said, “Capacity building is sustainable only when it multiplies. You leave this program not only with new technical skills, but also with a responsibility to apply and share what you have learned. We aim to build a national system in which data is not merely collected and stored, but routinely analyzed, visualized, communicated, and converted into evidence that informs decisions.” The UNDP Representative said: “Through investments in tools such as STATA and Power BI, with sustained capacity development, they are building institutions that can independently generate, analyze, and communicate the evidence needed to guide South Sudan’s development.” Both leaders extended their profound gratitude to the African Development Bank for its funding support under the STEG-SS project, acknowledging that long-term investment in national statistical capacity is important to transparency, public accountability, and sustainable development.
